The Slocan Valley, Okanagan and Home

These photos are in reverse chronological order. The bears and face in the wood were captured in Hope on the way back to Bellingham just before crossing over at Abbotsford. The face was eerie. It was rainy these last couple of days although the mountain views (of the cascades) out of Hope were magnificent.

The next photo is of Slocan Lake, in Silverton, near New Denver. Across the lake is Valhalla State Park, only accessible by boat.
It was here that I met a bee-keeper, his wife had left to go back one day early ... so we shared stories of the wildernesses we'd visited. At 9pm I could just make out a pair of Ducks pulling into shore right in front of us to go to sleep. They happily snoozed there until about 10am the next morning when the sun fell on them, woke up and then were easily identified as Merganzers. The lake has so much inflow that the water is replaced at least twice a year. In the past mining operations had poisoned the lake ... but the strong inflows guaranteed its recovery, thank goodness. Just north of here was Nakusp Hot Springs ... where I camped. I had been strongly led to here and met two lady ex-teachers who happened to be camping next to me and run wilderness educational camping trips for kids in California. They actually strongly encouraged me to consider the private sector, having been disillusioned by 30 years in public schools, where their hands were tied. The springs themselves were very hot and I could only hack an hour before retiring to a good nights sleep.

From here I continued South and stopped off at Nelson (no photos) where the happy coincidences continued ... I found a fantastic French bakery (Fougasse and spicy Ginger Cookies were my choice) and then a used bookstore where I found the fantastic Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez and the Canadian classic Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat for $2 a piece! and directions to Oso Negro coffee shop. A well-spent 2 hours. I even called in at the Pacific Insight factory to enquire after a job on my way to Christina Lake.

Of course life is never perfect and I caught a speeding ticket (for doing 70 km/h on a 60 km/h freeway ramp when joining the freeway ... I guess they need their revenue any which way they can). Camped at Christina Lake ... and this time it was free ... must be end of season. Again really friendly people.

The open park picture with the tables is of Bear Creek campground opposite Kelowna city. My best campground ... here I was simply taking photos and came across Tania ... really just starting her journey but willing to share her dreams while living by fruit-picking and resort work. Here it wasa balmy 75 deg every day and no mosquitoes. This campground was exceptional for its wide open fields and picnic spaces and its lakefront beaches where a lazy hour or two could be spent.
In the campground itself it seemed that most people were vying for the largest camper award ... one of them people were actually flocking to see ... was 3 stories high and not quite as long as a bus ... just like the Star Wars sand-people transporter! Autumn had arrived and the light breezes covered the whole area in a blanket of yellow leaves.

The next 3 photos were taken on the Bear Creek hiking trail ... I had been trying to shoot a clear photo of the logs for 3 days and was finally rewarded. The feeling I got from this hike was of "dryness" .. so the last photo of the trio was trying to capture this expression in a photo ... have to think some more about this.

My car on the ferry was just south of Revelstoke on the way to Nakusp. The toad photos were taken at Summit Lake ... where there are many thousands of these tiny half-inch toads everywhere.

What looks like a lakeside cabin was actually an old boat house on Slocan Lake, in New Denver ... this pristine lake would be fun to canoe on.

The cloud, bike on roof and Takkawa Falls were taken in Yoho NP ... when I took the photo of the falls it had dropped to 40 deg and I was freezing (in shorts). Takkawa means "magnificent" in Cree ... I agreed ... and tried to capture this in this detail shot near sunset.

The rainfall in the sun was captured at Revelstoke ... from the mountain it reminded me of Tolkien's city of the elves in Lord of the Rings ... the river is the Columbia and I camped on the other side. This was the campground of the bear and deer ... a lively place ... my first night a bear gave 2 long sniffs about 100m from my tent :)

The flower is Valerian ... the falls are the Athabascar Falls near Jasper ... apparently some of the most powerful falls. The trip from Jasper to Yoho was accomplished in a day ... so my musings were limited ... but its safe to say I would not choose to return to Lake Louise ... too many tourists!!

The last 3 shots are some of my favorites. The open plain with the mountain in the background ... I will post-process ... to emphasize the snow layer ... it looked just like icing on a chocolate cake ... this one I may blow up for my wall. The fluted mountain top detail made me think of God plastering his landscape and leaving the implement embedded in HIS work and then a detail of Lake Louise where I just managed to avoid any tourists.

The trip brought me to strength and taught me to listen carefully for all HIS instructions, while maintaining the constant daily disciplines.

Canada was filled with welcoming people who, almost daily, invited me to live amongst them ... who knows ... someday perhaps. Much of my trip avoided the highly commercial tourist operations in the NPs ... I mainly explored the Provincial parks, which were a lot less developed.

Canadian Rockies

The picture of me outside the overnighting hut was taken when it was about 42 degF and misty ... it did clear. I had climbed up 3 miles to get here and gained 1800' ... it was pretty tough ... did it in about an hour. That'll teach me to ask 21 year old info center girls what their favorite hikes are! This was a partial hike up to the Mckinney hut near the Spencer Mountain area in Valemount.

Next shot is a view of alpine with so many colors ... this one I shot at f22 (stopped all the way down for max depth of field) ... caught the flavor of the Canadian Rockies perfectly I thought.

The snow shot is for my mom ... I was at about 7000' in the bow mtn area and this was just a brief side trip off the road (Sept 10th :))

Next was a cloud detail somewhere along the icefields parkway ... the shape just caught me ... almost pensive ... good shot for a background on your computer if you are writing perhaps?

Biking was shot in a traffic jam just east of Yoho NP ... I have only used the bike one day ... but as I have now transitioned south there should be more opportunities soon (Castlegar). I'm currently in Revelstoke ... apparently some of the best skiing in Canada can be had here ... it starts snowing mid-Oct. Lots of bears here at the moment ... I heard one sniffing a few hundred yards from my tent last night and the whole town is in the center of their "bear season" with trees being destroyed in almost every yard!!

The next shot is in Yoho NP ... this so reminded me of a castle (perhaps with a trapped princess within) when I saw it at dusk a few nights ago.

The wolf's name is Wily and he is the Omega wolf (the one who babysits the young-uns ... almost like a friendly uncle) with Crystal our instructor. I have also included a shot of wolf body language so you can interpret their behaviour the next time you meet one :)

Wolves are really social and friendly ... probably closest to us in terms of their social bonding.

I am enjoying my wanderings ... and chat to several warm people every day now. In Canada there seems to be a greater awareness of the need for proper eco-management. I am starting to truly travel serendiptiously ... following every whim (almost). Now that I am living from my heart, instead of pretending to be an engineer, I am so much happier.

Heading south from here (raining a bit today) tomorrow to new campgrounds and a ferry ride :) ... free at last!

Wells Gray Provincial Park :)

I finally made it to the park and am having a blast. The 1st night I crashed at a B&B run by a 75 yr old lady named Clemence (French) ... the fifth photo is the view from the balcony the next morning. I almost felt like one of the family and we chatted and laughed for hours before I had to sleep (at 8p!). The previous evening I'd been kept awake by trains at Steelhead Park campsite (really need some earplugs). The view is of Dutch Lake ... apparently the lake is only big enough to support one nesting pair of loons ... so a battle was fought for it.
The falls is Helmlecken Falls (141m ~ 3x Niagra). There are many falls in the park, but this one's the highest. OK the boat shot is from my own personal jet-boat tour of Clearwater Lake heading as far into the park as I can get easily. The lake is 1200' deep in places where a glacier dug out a huge boulder a mile long and several hundred feet thick.

There is a picture of me next to an old Shepherder's Hut at nearly 6000' on the way to Trophy Mountain ... I climbed up to this from about 5 km away in an hour. I also included a detail of the hut and if you look carefully you can see the sleeping bench near the back. It won't last too many more years ... the logs are starting to rot.
As I came down from this hike I found three ladies (40 year old or greater) hiking up with full 60 lb packs to overnight further up on the mountain ... they were concerned that their might be other campers ahead of them and I could tell them from the tracks that only one person was ahead of them. When I got down I got introduced to Sparky a labrador collie ... who really wanted to walk ... but had to wait for his master Bob to be ready ... so in the meantime he tried my car's front seat out for size :) Bob and I and his mom swappped stories for a while ... with me finishing by encouraging them to keep this wilderness wild ... there are a lot of people with their eyes on the resources ... everything from dams to uranium mining.
I now know why I'm up here ... to learn to discern and follow God's leading without hesitation or question ... and as I'm practicising this ... so life becomes more and more fun and easy to live :) It becomes easier each day.
Next onto Jasper/Banff/Yoho/Glacier ... probably Monday ... there is one more peak (Pyramid) I'll attempt on Sunday.

Catchup @ Kamloops

OK ... finally found a free hour of computer access in Kamloops. This computer has most tools locked out ... so I'm trying to push up the 5 MB images straight from my camera memory card ... sorry. Images are being difficult :(
The first photo is of Miracle Beach where I camped ... good choice ... even did some cycling. This is the beach with the tide out .... when it was in it was almost up to the log on the left. Much drier on the East coast ...
The second is of Strathcona Park in central Vancouver Island ... there were 500 cars at the parking lot for these hikes and that's a lot for VC Island. Its about 4000' ... I did a 10km hike and about half of it was on platforms like this. Absolutely pristine Alpine wilderness (my favorite ... my next 3 stops will be like this). I think they put the platforms in to stop people walking on the flowers some of which can take 500 years to come back if they are squashed. I have more photos and will upload later.

Kamloops is in an arid region between the Cascades and the Rockies ... not my favorite zone but probably the last civilization for at least a few days. I'm heading for Clearwater and the Wells Gray State Park after this and a snack at a local cafe. Stayed at Steelhead last night ... still a bit tired ... the trains go by every hour or so with much noise and sleeping on the ground I can even feel the vibration :) Fabulous lake ... see the recent waypoints ... the lake is 50km long ... would have been fun to traverse it in a high-speed boat (water-skiing for 50km :)). Perhaps my next trip. Lots of fishing and bird-watching available.
The Kamloops tour guide confirmed it ... sawmill and paper mill operations across Canada (at least on VC Island, Lilloeet and Kamloops) are shutting down and each region is rapidly shifting to tourism.
My journey continues ... in the next 3 areas (after driving hard for the last 3 days) I'll be able to enjoy more hiking and photography and continue figuring out things ... I realize now this is part of the normal identity formation ... takes time and reflection.
Will try to keep this up ... take care

Vancouver Island Mon Tues

End of Sunday: Found a street person to give my old umbrella to ... she was soooo grateful ... amazing .... and then I found "Johns" restaurant and had a fantastic Eggs Benedict :)
Mon: Had to get up early for ziplining @ Adrenalinezip.com ... definitely in the top 100 things to do before you die :) One of the lines is 1000' long ... you are whizzing through the treetops for at least a minute. The tour is 2 hours long ($75). Miles better than bungee ... should be some photos emailed to me soon of my escapades.

Next onto China Beach for camping ... now I'm just grabbing a campsite as needed .. no more reservations ($6/night). Found some more veggie Samosas and Lentils and rice from an Indian Health food store ... really healthy! Walked down to the beach (2.5 kms) ... really rocky but not bad ... my 1st look at this coast. Had to put on my clothes in the tent @ 3am ... cold enough to "freeze the b***s off a brass monkey" ... once I put a hat on I was fine.

Tues: Morning was good ... didn't spill my water this morning so I had some coffee and oatmeal (instead of a power bar). Read some Muir last night ... really fits this trip ... he was such an adventurer ... real inspiration.

This morning set off for Sombrio Beach at 10am ... slowwww start. Good photos of this beach ... the trek down was in a forest ... at least 20 deg cooler ... so maybe 45 degF ... brrrrr. Thought about camping here on the beach ... but after I saw the spiders I headed for Port Renfrew :)
Probably hiked about 5 kms ... but got a bit cloudy and I need to find a campsite.

No phone or Wifi service here ... but the info center had PCs so I jumped on. Will head back to the East side of the Island tomorrow.

Will write more when I'm back on free service ... this just cost me $5!!

2nd Day on Vancouver Island

1st day was bright and sunny ... the crossing from Tsawassen was fun ... very smooth ... I used my binos to check out the Gulf Islands the ferry has to thread through. There are so many homes and lighthouses and the interiors lokok dark and mysterious with lots of private adventures awaiting. Stopped at a Info center after getting off the ferry and found out about Boutchard Gardens and their fireworks. I can truly agree now these were the best I have seen anywhere ... lasted about 45 mins and built in crescendos of sound and light. For the first time, watching fireworks, I felt like a small child seeing them for the first time, with all the wonder and amazement.

I did take a few shots of flowers and one of the band that played prior to the start of fireworks @ 9p (I was at the gardens at 5p to guarantee myself a spot!). I actually fell asleep watching the band.

But I have got ahead of myself ... remember I haven't camped for 20 years ... so I was a bit rusty.
The tent went up really smoothly and the bag and pad worked ... although my old bones need a thicker pad and I just got a recommendation of where to get one :) The campsite is soooo nice ... hot-ish showers are 100 m away and I wandered around and saw every possible camping setup you could think of. Goldstream is a good campsite (and its a provincial park). One photo in here of Niagra falls with the incredibly steep trail leading up to the side

Today its tipping it down (raining) ... so I will spend the afternoon in Victoria with my umbrella.
There is an Imax ... etc. I guess I could put on my cycle gear and try ziplining in the rain :( ... perhaps not ... I'll wait for a break in the weather :) The manager @ Blenz says it should clear up soon ... perhaps tomorrow.

I talked to a nice lady in Blenz ... her name was Lucy ... she could have been straight out of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe by CS Lewis ... so sweet and thoughtful. She gave me an idea for my class where you use Corn Syrup and food coloring to create finger paintings ... if I used rice-paper they'd be edible :)

I am realizing that it is the journey that is most important and not the destination ... I could be in Paris (especially with all this rain). I did remember my brolley but its getting a bit worse for wear .. so I'm off to buy a new one.

I am getting tips for my next time ... this time I'm realizing its almost a "scope-out" mission ... just heard about Della falls in Strathcona Park (highest falls in N. America) .. but its an overniter.
And I still want to do the whole of Juan De Fuca trail another time.

My friend Allan, in Bellingham was correct, in general the people in Canada are much more friendly, warm, intelligent and curious ... they remind me of the folks in Colorado.

OK ... almost out of juice ... signing off for now ...

Last day in Vancouver City

A nice sunny day.

Tried Dr Sun-Yat-Sen's classical Chinese garden. This was surprisingly non-touristy, there are only two small stores and they are mostly hidden from the garden.
The third photo is the view from the study of the scholar.

Essentially the chinese liked to visit the mountains to enjoy the quiet and peace found there. This garden is an attempt to bring the mountains to the home.

Old chinatown surrounding this is quite rundown and filled with tourist shops ... the garden is an oasis.

After the garden I thought Gastown might be convenient ... mostly pubs and shops with one steam clock. If you really want to pay $24.99 for a hat ...

(Crossing East Hastings was more harrowing than expected ... hordes of "high" homeless right in your face ... a terrible paleness on them ... )

In the late afternoon I prepped for my ferry ride to Victoria tomorrow. I am off to Vancouver Island 'till Sept 1st.

After journalling for an hour this evening ... I find myself humbled by my arrogance(superciliousness) ... I judge too easily ... even though I try not to ... Yoda quote applies ".. there is no try ... do or do not". So I choose to no longer be arrogant with anyone. And only a fool hides his ignorance with bluster.
(Thank-you [God] for revealing this.)
